Basic Information
State Foundation Institute of Pharmacology Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (SF IPh RAMS) is embodied in the Department of Medical Biological Sciences Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS).
Main research projects pursued at the Institute are concentrated in the field search and testing of novel pharmacological substances able to produce in human the action upon:
- Nervous and psychic functions in normal state and pathology;
- Blood circulation, metabolism and heart activity;
- Resistance of a human organism to adverse environment exposure.
Scope of Institute activities involves:
- Identification of new targets for pharmacological action - receptor complexes, related systems responsible for transmitting information in biomembrane, the secondary messengers;
- Design and synthesis of novel chemical compounds with adequate pharmacological profiles as compared to commonly available substances;
- Search for endogenous regulators of cellular functions;
- Examination of "structure - effect" relationship;
- Screening and preclinical testing of novel substances.
In particular, Institute research workers carry out the chemical synthesis and full cycle of preclinical studies on novel a) neuropsychotropic substances (antidepressants, tranquilizers, nootrops, analgetics, antialcohol agents, antipsychotics; b) cardiovascular agents (antianginal, antiarrhythmics and cerebrovascular agents); c) agents able to diminish withdrawal syndrome, physical and psychic alcohol dependence, predisposition to drug abuse; d) agents capable of increasing organism adaptation to adverse environment exposure.
Main areas of Institute activities encompass:
- Experimental production to cumulate ready drug formulations for further satisfaction of clinical trials needs;
- Translation of recent achievements in experimental and clinical pharmacology into everyday medical practice;
- Education and in-service training of science workers and medical personnel via graduate and postgraduate educational systems;
- Improvement of qualifications of science and medical workers within the framework of additional professional education and training;
- Development of scientific and technical co-operation with international legal entities, external economic activities in accordance with current legislation and International Agreements of the Russian Federation aimed to design & development, patenting and implementation, experimental production, storage and marketing of novel medicaments and parapharmaceutical products;
- Prediction, planning, co-ordination, peer-reviewing and expert assessment of scientific research works in the fields of academic and applied pharmacology and related domains;
- Popularization of the past heritage and newest advances in the field of domestic pharmacology, comprehensive examination and implementing of international developments in pharmacology. To this end the Institute of Pharmacology:
- Holds in a due order international, republic-based and inter-institutional congresses, conferences, symposia and workshops allowing to discuss recent scientific advances and the choice of most promising avenues for pharmacology advancement;
- Scientific editing and preparing for publication of topical scientific paper collections in pharmacology, monographs and guidance manuals;
- Provides on its basis for activities of the Secretariat of Russian Scientific Society of Pharmacology (RSSP);
- The institute is the common member of RSSP, it renders financial support to RSSP by way of annual membership fee payments from non-budget sources;
- Has membership in associations, unions, establish in a due course other non-profit organizations;
- The Institute participates in creation of economic societies and companies, including international partnership in an effort to meet more fully the needs of Russian medicine in pharmaceutical products;
- The Institute runs a specialized Scientific Thesis Council for Ph.D. and Dr. thesis defense in Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology;
- In 2002 the Department of Pharmacogenetics of Pharmacology Chair Moscow Medical University was set up on the Institute's premises.
